Naval Station Norfolk is geographically located in an area known as Hampton Roads. The cities included in the Hampton Roads area are Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Chesapeake. The base location was originally home to the 1907 Jamestown Exposition. The 474 acre property was purchased by the Navy in April of 1917. It is home to approximately 70 ships, submarines, and commands.
The mission of Naval Station Norfolk is to ensure operational readiness of the US Atlantic Fleet, serving the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. The services and facilities provided improves the safety and quality of life for sailors and families. Naval Station Norfolk is home to major units such as the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
On the base, there are numerous activities such as sailing, bowling, fitness and sports centers, water park, picnic areas, hobby shops, and recreation centers. The surrounding area of Naval Station Norfolk are full of exciting attractions and activities. In Norfolk, check out the Virginia Zoo, Chrysler Hall, Norfolk Scope, or visit the beautiful Norfolk Botanical Gardens. In Virginia Beach (about a 20 minute drive), visit the sandy east coast beaches, the Virginia Aquarium, and the Ocean Breeze water park.
If visiting the peninsula side of the water, take a day to explore the famous Busch Gardens, or stroll around historical settlements Yorktown and Jamestown. The surrounding areas also offer many beautiful state parks, memorials, and festivals. Norfolk is home to the famous baseball team Norfolk Tides, and well known hockey team the Norfolk Admirals.
Norfolk is home to 33 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 high schools. A college education is attainable at Tidewater Community Colleges, Old Dominion University, Virginia Wesleyan College, Norfolk State University, and several private institutions.
Healthcare on base is provided by the Sewell’s Point Branch Medical Clinic, just outside the naval base. Services provided are acute care, preventative medicine, primary care, and specialty clinics. There are also several major hospitals – Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Dental care is also provided by the Naval Dental Clinic Norfolk. Services offered are general dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, and periodontics.
Naval Station Norfolk provides rental housing on or off base. Housing on base is limited to 70 rentals, and is served by a waiting list. Most personnel choose to rent or buy off base choosing an apartment, or single family home. Temporary lodging is available via motels and hotels with extended stay options. The Navy Lodge is also a hotel located just off the base and is accessible to military members and their families. Housing in the surrounding communities is affordable, especially considering military housing allowances.
Grocery shopping is convenient using the commissary. The commissary is located on Mall Drive in building CD-13. The Navy Exchange also provides a food court and services such as a barber/beauty salon, optical center, portrait studio, Fedex/UPS/Western Union services, gas, and a mini mart.
