NAS Oceana is located in the well known Hampton Roads. The cities included in the Hampton Roads area are Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Chesapeake.
The 6,820 acre property was acquired by the Navy in 1940. NAS Oceana is home to the Navy’s Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Force of Strike Fighter Aircraft and Inter-Agency Joint Operations.
NAS Oceana’s mission is to ensure readiness of equipment and personnel for overall force readiness. Facilities and services provided improve overall quality of life and safety for NAS Oceana sailors, pilots, and families. NAS Oceana base houses major carrier air wings such as Carrier Air Wing 1, which is assigned to USS Enterprise (CVN-65). The base is also home to the well known F/A-18 Hornets and the Super Hornets. NAS Oceana is currently averaging 325,000 flight exercises annually, while supporting total force and shore-based readiness.
On the base, there are many activities: fitness centers, bowling alley, golfing, picnic areas, and recreation centers. The surrounding area of NAS Oceana is packed with activities and attractions.
In Virginia Beach, visit the miles of beautiful beaches, the Virginia Aquarium, and the Ocean Breeze water park, all within a 5 minute drive. In Norfolk (20 minute drive), check out the Virginia Zoo, Norfolk Scope, Chrysler Hall, and Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Busch Gardens is also within driving distance, as well as the Yorktown and Jamestown historical settlements.
There are also many beautiful state parks, festivals, and local events. Nearby Norfolk is home to the well known hockey team Norfolk Admirals and baseball team Norfolk Tides.
Also on base, is the Aviation Historical Park, open daily for touring, with a 13 aircraft spectacle. There is also the Flame of Hope Memorial Park for observing take-offs and landings of the aircraft. Another must see is the annual NAS Oceana Airshow in September. Many schools surround the NAS Oceana base, with both public and private options available, as well as pre-k private schooling. Local colleges include Tidewater Community College, Old Dominion University, Virginia Wesleyan College, Norfolk State University, as well as private sources for a college education.
The Branch Health Clinic is the main choice for military members for health care. Services offered are routine physicals, primary care, optometry, and occupational health care. Dental services are also offered at the Branch Health Clinic. There are also several hospitals in the surrounding area: Virginia Beach General Hospital, Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, and a Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters facility.
Base Allowance Housing provides affordability for either living on base, or for renting or buying off base. Housing on base is limited, and has a waiting list. Many personnel choose to rent or buy off base. Mid Atlantic Navy Gateway Inns & Suites (NGIS) is often a choice for temporary lodging, which is affordable and conveniently located. There are other numerous options for lodging in the Virginia Beach area.
The Navy Exchange on NAS Oceana offers the convenience of shopping for military members and their dependents. Located at the exchange are many services such as a barber shop, fast food restaurants, and a gas station. There is also a full commissary for grocery shopping.
