The name Quantico comes from a Native American term, which means near a large stream. The base was established in 1917 due to its close approximately to Washington, D.C.
During World War I many Marines trained here and in 1920 the Marine Corps University was started. This base was highly important during WWII as amphibious landing crafts were developed here and service members were trained for usage as well.
Today this base houses units that focus on research and training for all aspects of the military. Marine Corps Embassy Security Group, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Marine Corps Systems Command, Marine Corps Training and Education Command, Marine Corps Network Operations Security Command and Marine Corps Wounded Warriors Regiment are all located here. All Marine Corps officers complete boot camp and training here. Trails are held here and prisoners are held at the Quantico brig where they await their court date or transfer to a long-term facility.
The base is located near many wonderful, historic cities. Washington D.C., Baltimore, Norfolk and Philadelphia are all a quick drive away. For a day trip, New York City offers top notch dining and entertainment. For a family vacation, Virginia Beach and many quiet beaches in North Carolina are a day drive away as well. Quantico itself offers quaint stores and independent restaurants. Families can enjoy museums, ice skating, water parks and touring working farms. Adults can enjoy live plays, concerts and touring the local wineries. The base itself holds many events for families and single soldiers.
Children living at Quantico attend DOD schools located on base. There are two elementary schools grades K-3, one intermediate school for grades 4-5, one middle school and one high school. There are also private schools offered in the surrounding communities.
