Sheppard Air Force base has a rich history of producing top-notch pilots. It was originally opened as an Army Air Corps training facility in 1941.
In addition to basic flying training, the base also provided advanced flying training, glider mechanic training, technical and flying instructor training and training for B-29 Superfortress flight engineers. The current Euro-Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training program was initially instituted in 1981.
Sheppard Air Force Base is part of the Air Education and Training Command. It is the largest and most diversified base for Air Force training. It is home to the 82nd Training Wing and the 80th Flying Training Wing. The 82nd Training Wing provides young airmen and women with follow-on training after boot camp. In addition, the 82nd Training Wing also provides medical and field training courses for officers and civilians. Air Force service members, Department of Defense civilians, service members from other branches and foreign nationals all come to Sheppard Air Force Base for training in the 82nd Wing.
The 80th Flying Training Wing is home to the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program, better known as ENJJPT. In addition to United States Air Force student pilots, ENJJPT also trains student pilots from all over the world. Pilots are trained for combat flying positions.
Sheppard Air Force Base is located north of Wichita Falls, Texas. Wichita Falls has a population just under 150,000. Wichita Falls is big enough to support local shopping, restaurants and culture. The tight community has great ties with Sheppard Air Force base and maintains a warm, small-town feel. There are various bars and dance clubs for visiting military members to enjoy. Service members who are new to Texas will enjoy attending the various rodeos that are held frequently throughout the year. Wichita Falls has a semi-professional football team and a junior hockey league.
Midwestern State University is located in the heart of Wichita Falls. Midwestern State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs. Vernon College offers certificate programs and various two-year degrees. There are a variety of options for service members with school-aged children. There are public and charter schools available. Magnet programs are available for students who are interested in math and sciences. There is an elementary school on Sheppard for students who transfer.
United Regional Health Care system is a large hospital located in downtown Wichita Falls. United Regional offers emergency, surgical, routine and specialty health care options. Kell West is the other large hospital in town. Many service members visit doctors on Sheppard Air Force Base for routine health care.
Airmen and women will typically be housed in dormitory-like barracks. Single student pilots are usually issued small efficiency apartments. For service members who are moving to Sheppard as a permanent duty station, there are military housing options available on and off base. Many service members also live off-base in the town of Wichita Falls. The real estate and renting markets are quite affordable. The Sheppard Housing Office should be contacted regarding temporary lodging at the Sheppard Inn.
