Laughlin Army Airfield was established in 1943. Later that year, the name changed to Laughlin Field. Another name change designated the base as Army Air Force Auxiliary Field.
After training B-26 flight personnel during World War II, the base was deactivated in 1945. Laughlin Air Force Base was activated in 1952. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, personnel based at Laughlin AFB gathered evidence that Soviet missile activity was occurring in Cuba.
Laughlin AFB trains new Air Force pilots to become disciplined and knowledgeable professionals, capable of serving and being deployed. The base hosts the 47th Flying Training Wing.
The city of Del Rio is west of Laughlin AFB. Lake Amistad, a reservoir near Del Rio, provides year-round recreational activities for people of all ages. Fishing, swimming, and boat activities are all available.
San Antonio is the closest big city in Texas. San Antonio hosts big city life and major American history. Other big cities, such as Houston and Dallas, provide weekend trip destinations. These cities also have major sports teams.
Laughlin AFB is very close to the Mexican border. It is very important to note that the Department of Defense does have strict policies regarding travel to Mexico. Currently, all non-official travel across the border is prohibited for active duty and other personnel.
The San Felipe-Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District serves the families of Laughlin AFB. Private school options are also available. Additionally, other independent school districts serve the surrounding areas.
The 47th Medical Group provides medical services to Laughlin AFB. Priority care is given to active duty members, followed by family of active duty.
Retired military and family of retired military are the third priority for the 47th Medical Group. The clinic does not provide emergency services, but ambulance services are available. Val Verde Regional Medical Center handles emergency care.
Housing on base is privatized and managed by Hunt. Wait times for housing tend to vary. The Air Force Housing website is currently the resource for housing on base at Laughlin AFB.
Housing off base is available in Del Rio and the surrounding areas. Housing costs are generally lower than the national average. Temporary housing is available at Laughlin Manor. Hotel accommodations are also available if lodging at Laughlin Manor is unavailable.
