About Fort Hood
Fort Hood was established in 1942 as Camp Hood. The land was initially acquired to test tank destroyers that were being used in World War II. Activity at Camp Hood declined towards the end of the war, and attention started to shift away from tank destroyers.
Fort Hood became a permanent post in 1950. III Corps moved to Fort Hood in 1954. III Corps was inactivated in 1959 and reactivated in 1961, and headquarters remained at Fort Hood.
During the Vietnam War, Fort Hood trained many units for the war. Following the war, many of the active duty soldiers remained at the base. Since Vietnam, Foot Hood has continued its involvement in training units and testing equipment.
The installation primarily serves as a platform for training and mobilization. Fort Hood is home to 1st Calvary Division, 4th Infantry Division, and twelve other units.
Killeen borders Fort Hood, and the community is deeply connected to the post. The city hosts family-friendly activities and all of the amenities of a mid-sized city.
With its central Texas location, Fort Hood has access to many of the larger cities in Texas. Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and the Gulf Coast are all within a day’s drive. Austin is particularly close, giving Fort Hood residents access to attractions like the Mexic-Arte Museum, the Texas State Capitol, and the Austin Film Festival. Professional football fans can enjoy the Dallas Cowboys or the Houston Texans.
Schools and Hospitals
Seven elementary schools and two middle schools are located on post. Those schools are operated by the Killeen Independent School District. Additionally, there are eight independent school districts in the surrounding areas.
The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center serves the inpatient and outpatient needs of soldiers and families at Fort Hood. Providers in the surrounding areas are available to attend to specialty care.
Housing on post is managed by Universal Services or Actus Lend Lease. Wait times vary, but most newcomers usually spend some period of time living off-base initially. Housing off post has rental and purchase options that are typically below the national average. Temporary housing is available at Holiday Inn Express, IHG Army Hotels.
