Dyess Air Force base is located about 200 miles west of Dallas, Texas. There are over 5000 people working inside the base which makes Dyess AFB the leading employer in the vicinity.
The 7th Bomb Wing belongs to the Air Combat Command which was activated in October of 1993. The unit provides combat training using the Boeing B-1B Lancer Bomber. It is also the Air Force’s foremost working B-1B group operating with 36 planes.
The community in Dyess AFB and the surrounding Abilene area is filled with attractions and fun activities for the entire family. Art lovers can enjoy cultured entertainment that is available at the Center for Contemporary Arts which houses four galleries and ten working studios. There is also the Abilene Philharmonic which is a 14,000 square foot facility.
Frontier Texas provides its visitors a state-of-the-art look of the Old West along with the Abilene Classical Chorus. Other interesting spots include 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, Cockerell Galleries and Studios, Buffalo Gap Historic Village, Abilene Zoo, Fort Phantom and Texas Forts Trail, The Grace Museum, National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, and the Paramount Theatre.
Just outside the gate of the Dyess housing area is Dyess Elementary which is a part of the Abilene Independent School District. Almost all of the students in this school are residents of the base. Children of families living inside the base and those in nearby communities such as Quail Hollow attend Dyess Elementary, Clark Middle, and Cooper High School.
In terms of health on the base, the 7th Medical Group provides personalized health assistance. The medical facility has clinics for minor surgical procedures, gynecology, mental health, and even optometry.
Living on-base is arranged by the Dyess AFB Housing Office. You can also arrange for temporary accommodations. The office has a list of houses and apartments for rent. In fact, 2 out of 3 Dyess families reside outside the base. There are also lot of affordable housing units within the base area. The going rental rate for an unfurnished home is between $210 and 799 if it is a one-bedroom unit. For temporary lodging, the Dyess Inn has 173 suites.
Dyess AFB has all the amenities that a family would require. There are excellent schools and quality medical facilities. Ample sources of entertainment are abound within the immediate area of the base.
