This base was originally known as Park Field, and its first use was as an Army Signal Corps Aviation School. After the Stock Market Crash of 1929, it became a transient camp for people who were unemployed. At the beginning of World War II, the base began being used as a Naval Reserve aviation center in order to support the war efforts. It continued being a logistics support center until 1993, when a Base Realignment and Closure committee decided it would be realigned as Naval Air Station Memphis. The name became Naval Support Activity Mid South in 1998 to greater reflect the installation’s new purpose.
Along with the Navy’s Human Resources Center of Excellence, Naval Support Activity Mid South is also home to the Navy Personnel Command and Recruiting Command. The Navy Manpower Analysis Center and the Army Corps of Engineers Finance Center are both located here and are the primary civilian employers found at this installation.
Since the base is in close proximity to Memphis, there is plenty to do in the way of nightlife and entertainment, as BB King’s Blues Club and Graceland are both located there. Those who prefer to stay a little closer to this naval station will find several golf clubs located in Millington. This area also hosts an annual arts and crafts festival each October along with a car show near the end of May.
Students of sailors who are stationed here will likely attend one of the Millington area schools, which are governed by the Shelby County School System. Students may also elect to attend one of the many private schools including Lighthouse Christian Academy and Faith Heritage Christian School. No hospitals are found in Millington, so service members must use one of the many facilities in Memphis. A few of these include St. Francis, Health South, and Baptist Memorial.
Forest City Military Communities manages the on-base housing at Naval Support Activity Mid South. Those who are ineligible for on-base housing can call the Automated Housing Referral Network at 901-874-5549 for assistance locating a home. The Navy Inn is located at this installation and welcomes those on TDY orders. The Navy Lodge is an excellent choice for visitors or families that need a temporary place to stay while waiting on housing to become available.
The Navy College office located on base provides opportunities for service members to earn college degrees while stationed here. They may choose to pursue this degree online or by attending one of the local community colleges in Millington or Memphis. A few of these colleges include Southwest Tennessee Community College, Dyersburg State Community College and Mid-South Community College.
