MCRD Parris Island takes up over 8,000 acres on Parris Island and several other smaller islands in the area. Over 4,000 of these acres are made up of salt marsh and tidal streams.
Built in 1861, MCRD Parris Island was designated as a Recruit Depot and was put into use for this purpose in 1915.
Consisting of five battalions and a Drill Instructor school, the Recruit Training Regiment is a main unit on MCRD Parris Island. The Recruit Training Regiment is the primary headquarters for the command and administrative functions that concern the basic training of all of the recruits. The Weapons and Field Training Battalion and Headquarters & Service Battalion are both important units on MCRD Parris Island as well.
Beaufort, South Carolina is located on Port Royal Island. It is a popular tourist destination with plenty of cultural and historical things to do; there are plenty of restaurants and bars to visit, and there are countless tourist attractions and other things to see and do in the area.

The Naval Hospital Beaufort is located near MCRD Parris Island and is a separate entity rather than a part of a larger military installation. There is also a Branch Medical Clinic, which is a part of the Naval Hospital Beaufort, located on MCRD Parris Island.
