During its early colonial days, the station concentrated on fleet support and industry trade.
In the 1970s the Station changed directions, establishing the Naval Education Training Center.
Naval commands focus on personnel training, education and logistic support for the entire complex.
As part of the training center the Surface Warfare Officers School Command replaced the Destroyer School training program.
The Naval Station’s mission is to ensure its service personnel are educated on the latest strategies and technology through, training, research and development to meet our nation’s naval demands for today and tomorrow.
There are over 50 naval and defense commands assigned to this station supporting the day to day activities, which include advanced undersea warfare techniques and systems. In the late 1970s the Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity set up repair facilities on base to support the Navy’s mobilized training.
Surrounding areas have been a popular summer playground for American families since the late 1800s. The Newport location is not only a prime station for the Navy, but it’s the yachting capital of the world. That claim is attached to largest fleet of America’s Cup winners. Families have gathered to watch the legendary sailors for years from this location.
During the winter months there’s an added attraction; the Newport ice rink is an open rink surrounded by historical colonial architecture with ocean views. It’s in the middle of downtown Newport where shops and restaurants are in abundance, perfect for a warm meal after ice skating on a rink larger than Rockefeller Square.
There are 6 school districts in the Naval Station Newport area for military personnel with dependents entering kindergarten to 5th grade, middle and high schools. Public schools have bus transportation assigned to each district and school meals are provided in each community.
Requirements include immunization, birth certificates, proof of residency and report cards from previous school attended. Adults interested in continuing their education, can attend the adult learning center in Newport. The Naval Health Clinic is located at the south end of the complex and provides the full range patient services. The Newport Hospital is a civilian facility where Naval physicians work with inpatient admissions and surgery services under a shared agreement with the Naval Health Clinic.
The Balfour Beatty Communities manage the on base furnished housing for single sailors at a per person occupancy rate. Attending student personnel will be assigned quarters for the duration of the training course. Quarters are furnished with appliances and include utility costs; personnel are responsible for paying telephone and cable charges.
Personnel with family pets may be limited to the size and bred of the pet. Single family housing is also available on base and managed through the Balfour Beatty Communities. Arriving personnel should contact the housing service center to confirm their application and requests for housing has been received and processed.
Off base housing information is available through the housing service center and strongly suggested that personnel meet with the center before committing to private housing off base. Personnel may have access to database with listings of off base homes within one hour of driving distance from the Station.
Temporary housing may be available seasonally, since the Newport area is a popular tourist location, especially during the summer months.
