A military member assigned to TDY or has PCS orders to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport, Rhode Island, which is near to Aquidneck Island and Narragansett Bay, will reside at the Navy’s premier site for training officers. It is home to the Naval War College, the Naval Justice School and several tenant commands.
Those arriving can find accommodation at the Navy Lodge, which does allow pets in some rooms.
Tip: Make reservations ahead of time to secure a room. For long-term stays, there are also housing units within seven miles of the base.
It’s advised that upon arrival for personnel to contact the Housing Office on base to be placed on the waiting list for housing as it is not immediately available.
Accompanied service members with children will find many child care services: ranging from a Child and Youth Program (CYP), School Age Care (SAC) program, Navy Child Development Homes (CDH) program, in addition to the Child Development Center (CDC) found on base.
Since there is no Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) on base, military families with children need to enroll them in one of the many school districts located in Newport County. Tip: By contacting the NAVSTA Newport School Liaison Office (SLO), one will receive information on school-age military child education. For grownups interested in continuing their education, a Navy College Representative often provides information sessions on base.
Military dependents and spouses that want to work will find employment services and listings on base at the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Human Resources Office (HRO). Finding employment off base is possible but difficult as the job unemployment rate in Rhode Island is at 10.2 percent, which is ranked fiftieth lowest (last) in the U.S. (BLS, 2012)
For family entertainment, there is the Brenton Point State Park which provides magnificent ocean views and the Belcourt Castle that is said to have a great collection of antique furnishings and art in the rooms.
