Altus Air Force Base is the home of the 97th Air Mobility Wing Mission, which enables global mobility with its expert training and aerial refueling crews.
The 97th Air Mobility Wing consists of several major units, including the 97th Operations Group, 97th Mission Support Group, 97th Medical Group and 97th Maintenance Directorate.
Altus, Oklahoma is a relatively small place with a population of only around 22,000. The area is one of the fastest growing, most progressive, and most prosperous cities in the state. Five elementary schools, one intermediate school, one junior high school, and one high school all call Altus Air Force Base home. Military dependent students who live on base attend these schools on their nine-week schedules. The 97th Medical Group is located on base and provides outpatient care for both active duty members and retired members, as well as their families. There is also a dental care clinic on base. Although there is no hospital on base, the Jackson County Hospital is located nearby, and the Jackson County EMS provides emergency transportation to the hospital.
Dormitories are available on base for single service members who can apply for a Basic Housing Allowance and the permission to move off base in certain situations.
There are 666 single-family housing units available on base for service members and their families; each house is a modern, brick home with central heat and air, basic kitchen appliances and washer and dryer connections.
For those who choose to live off base, there are apartments and homes for rent in the Altus, Oklahoma area and in surrounding locations. Due to a low cost of living in the area, there are typically plenty of rentals available for affordable monthly rent payments.
