The metro area has a population of about 97,000, which is partly composed of 1,200 active duty, almost 1,400 family members, 700 retirees and 330 civilian Department of Defense employees.
Minot AFB in North Dakota is surrounded by a network of communities that support, appreciate and respect the Airmen who live and work there. The base is 50 miles from the border of Canada and about 13 miles north of Minot. It is often referred to as Team Minot, which highlights the good relationship between Minot Air Force base and surrounding communities. Minot AFB was officially instituted in 1957.
