MCAS New River started as a small training area and has grown into a major fully functional airfield. Approximately 7,500 active duty service members and 1,750 family members call it home.
The two major units at MCAS New River are Marine Aircraft Group 26 and Marine Aircraft Group 29. The Marine Wing Support Squadron 272, 362nd Training Squadron, Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Detachment B and the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training are also important units.
The City of Jacksonville is a very military-friendly area due to the two military installations that are located in its proximity. Many service members consider an assignment here very desirable because of its beachside location. Jacksonville offers plenty of restaurants and lots of shopping as well as the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. The area also has a surprisingly low cost of living and has a population that is a little over 150,000.
Dependent children who reside in permanent base housing at MCAS New River are eligible to attend the Camp Lejeune Dependents Schools, which include Tarawa Terrace II Elementary School, Delalio Elementary, Heroes Elementary, Johnson Primary School, Bitz Intermediate School, Brewster Middle School and Lejeune High School. There is a Child Development Center located on base that provides daycare services and a preschool.
Military families have the choice of the MCAS New River Family Practice Clinic and The Navy Family Practice Clinic for primary care, and the Naval Hospital on Camp Lejeune also provides healthcare services.
The 4,447 family housing units on MCAS New River and Camp Lejeune are considered to be some of the finest housing options in the United States Marine Corps. The Lejeune Inn offers temporary housing for enlistees and officers and their families who are just arriving. There are other affordable hotels in the area in the event that there is no vacancies at the Lejeune Inn.
Families who do not want to reside on base have no shortage of options in the Jacksonville area. Apartments and houses are available in a wide variety of price ranges, and there are more rural areas in relatively close proximity to Jacksonville and MCAS New River with affordable rental options for service members and their families.
