Named after Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general, Fort Bragg was built in 1918. It now includes an area known as Pope Field, which was originally a separate Air Force Base known as Pope Air Force Base; Pope Field is still used by the USAF, but it is now under the control of the US Army.
Fort Bragg extends over 251 square miles and covers parts of Cumberland, Hoke, Moore and Harnett counties. Although it is primarily located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, it actually also takes up a part of the town of Spring Lake.
Fort Bragg is most commonly known for being the home location of the 82nd Airborne. There are two other United States Army airborne units that call Fort Bragg home: The XVIII Airborne Corps and the United States Army Special Operations Command, which is also known as the USASOC.
These aren’t the only units that are situated on Fort Bragg, however. Also included are the Womack Army Medical Center, the 16th Military Police Brigade, the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 528th Sustainment Brigade and many more.
The city of Fayetteville is known for being, “A community of history, heroes and a hometown feeling.” The area is very military-friendly and has a pleasant climate; this area of North Carolina is known for relatively chilly by mild winters and warm, humid summers. The city of Fayetteville offers plenty of options for shopping, dining out, going to the movies, going bowling and enjoying other activities, and it also offers a healthy economy with job opportunities in various industries for dependents who are living at Fort Bragg. The cost of living is considered to be relatively low when compared to the higher national average.
The Fort Bragg School District, which is operated by the Department of Defense, consists of ten schools: Eight elementary schools, an intermediate school and a middle school. Students who are in the ninth grade can opt to attend the middle school on post or can attend one of the schools in the Cumberland County School District; students who are in grades ten through 12 attend high school in the Cumberland County as well.
Because Fort Bragg is such a large military installation, there are approximately 4,400 students who are enrolled in the Fort Bragg School District and who attend school on base.
There are also four child care facilities on base that offer daycare services and preschool, and in-home child care services are also provided for children from ages four weeks to twelve years of age. There is a youth center on base for students between the fifth and twelfth grades that offers gyms, an indoor pool, a dance studio and many different activities.
The Womack Army Medical Center provides high quality healthcare services for those who are stationed at Fort Bragg and their dependents, and the Army Dental Command handles all dental care.
Temporary lodging for those who are being relocated to Fort Bragg is provided at the Airborne Inn. There are ten neighborhoods on base that provide permanent base housing with two-, three- and four-bedroom homes available.
