Known as one of the best all-weather jet bases in the world, Cherry Point’s extended runway system is even used as an emergency landing site for the shuttles that launch out of Cape Canaveral, Florida. MCAS Cherry Point is located close to Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps installation that is situated in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
MCAS Cherry Point is the home of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. It is also the Department of Defense’s sole Naval Aviation Depot, which works on the aircraft and aircraft components that are used by the Marine Corps, Navy and other branches of the military. MCAS Cherry Point is also the home of the Combat Service Support Group-21 and a Naval Clinic.
Located in the eastern part of North Carolina, MCAS Cherry Point is conveniently located near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. With a low cost of living in the area, there are still plenty of things for service members and their families to do. There are plenty of restaurants and places for shopping, and MCAS Cherry Point is located near both Wilmington and Jacksonville, which are both known for nightlife, shopping and more.
Although there are no DoD schools on MCAS Cherry Point, there are plenty of good area schools for the children of active duty, reserve and retired service members who are serving at MCAS Cherry Point. Dependent children in the area attend Craven County Public Schools, where there are elementary, middle and high schools in various locations.
The Naval Health Clinic is located on base and provides primary care services for service members and their dependents. For emergency situations, local ambulance services are utilized for health care purposes. The CarolinaEast Health System features 305 beds for patients and is located in nearby New Bern; this hospital treats patients in Craven county and other surrounding counties. There is also a Naval Hospital on Camp Lejeune, which is located in nearby Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Atlantic Marine Corps Communities offers plenty of housing opportunities for service members and their families. These on-base housing units include plenty of amenities, such as swimming pools and more.
For those who do not want to live on base, there are plenty of homes and apartments available for rent or lease in the surrounding area, such as in Havelock, Morehead City, New Bern and Jacksonville.
Temporary housing is available for service members and their families who are just arriving to MCAS Cherry Point. Both Officers’ and Enlistees’ Transient Lodging is available. If there is no availability, service members will need to seek permission to stay in a hotel or other temporary lodging off base.
