Camp Lejeune is a Marine Corps training base. This training facility is located conveniently between two deep sea ports, Morehead City and Wilmington, which makes it the perfect location for quick deployments. The base was constructed in 1941 and is supplemented by Marine Corps Air Station New River, Courthouse Bay, Camp Johnson, Stone Bay, Camp Geiger and the Greater Sandy Run Training Area, which are additional training facilities. Over 43,000 Marines and Sailors from all over the world call this base home.
Camp Lejeune is the home of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, which is one of only three Marine Expeditionary Forces in the United States Marine Corps. Supplementing the II Marine Expeditionary Force is the II Marine Expeditionary Force IMA Detachment and 2d Marine Division. Three Marine Expeditionary Units, the 2nd Marine Air Wing and several other units also call the base home.
Since Camp Lejeune is considered a training facility, the base also includes the Marine Corps Engineer School for officers, the School of Infantry, the Special Missions Training Center, the Weapons Training Battalion, and the Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools. There is also a Naval Hospital on base.
Located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Camp Lejeune is actually perfectly located in a beautiful coastal area on the East Coast, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The 14th largest city in the state of North Carolina, Jacksonville is the county seat of Onslow County and is located near the Southern Outer Banks. There are plenty of restaurants, places to shop, bars and clubs and more for residents to enjoy.
The Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune provides healthcare to active duty and retired military members and their dependents. Onslow Memorial Hospital is the local civilian hospital.
There are several Department of Defense schools, including four elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school and one high school. All dependent children who live on base with an active duty parent is eligible to attend these schools, and students who live off base with an active duty parent can also gain permission to attend these educational facilities. There is also a preschool and daycare facilities.
For those who are looking for temporary housing, the Lejeune Inn has 90 units that provide temporary housing for military members and their families. Bachelor Enlisted Quarters and Bachelor Office Quarters are also available for single military members.
There are also plenty of family housing options available on Camp Lejeune. In fact, there are over 4,000 units on the base, and all of them have either been remodeled or are scheduled to be remodeled in the near future.
There are two, three, and four bedroom units available for various military servicemen and women and their families, and the base office can also provide information about other apartments, homes and other housing options that are available off-base yet in the local area.
