Fort Hamilton was the first National Guard training camp in the United States. Captain Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Captain Abner Doubleday served at Fort Hamilton. The installation is a combined community that includes all branches of the United States military. Approximately 300 services members make up the population at Fort Hamilton.
Fort Hamilton’s mission is to provide harbor defense and security to New York City with the assistance of the National Guard and Army Reserve.
Fort Hamilton is home to the United States Army Corps of Engineers headquarters. Other units that make up Fort Hamilton include the Military Entrance Processing Station, the New York City Recruiting Battalion, the 1179th Deployment Support Brigade and the 77th Regional Readiness Command.
Parents may choose to send their children to any of the New York City Schools. A wide variety of programs are offered and school choice in New York City is often made by the educational opportunities rather than the location. There are no school located on-post. There are, however, several school in close proximity to Fort Hamilton, including one high school, two kindergarten through eighth grade schools and three schools for children in kindergarten through grade five. In addition to public schools, there are 68 private and parochial schools located very close to the installation.
The Ainsworth Army Health Clinic serves Fort Hamilton. The clinic provides primary care services to soldiers at Fort Hamilton. However, the clinic does not provide dental services. For emergencies, dental or specialist care, service members and their families can utilize the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.
Fort Hamilton is located in Brooklyn, New York. While most service members assigned to Fort Hamilton live on-post due to the live cost of living in New York City, they often leave the installation for entertainment, shopping and nightlife. The city of New York has some of the best shopping venues in the world. Families can enjoy Broadway shows or visit Central Park.
Family housing at Fort Hamilton is managed by Balfour Beatty Communities. Apartment-style homes are typically available on demand to all ranks. Single-family residences are only available to officers.
Three to six bedrooms units are available on-post. Residents in the four Fort Hamilton communities can enjoy the outdoor pool, the fitness center and the many playgrounds located around the post. Amenities include washer and dryer connections, ceiling fans and dishwashers.
The Holiday Inn Express Fort Hamilton has 46 rooms and can accommodate service members who need temporary housing. Each room includes queen sized beds, a 32 inch television, refrigerator and microwave. Holiday Inn Express Fort Hamilton is conveniently located just 15 minutes from Fort Hamilton.
