Holloman AFB has all the amenities of a full community. Entertainment and recreation is readily available in the neighboring towns.
The partnership between airmen and civilians has been amazing. Back in 1942, Holloman Air Force Base was founded as the Alamogordo Air Field.
In honor of Col. George V. Holloman, a forerunner in the research of guided missiles, the base was renamed after him.
The world’s fastest and longest high speed track test was conducted in Holloman.
The city of Alamogordo is the nearest community to Holloman Air Force Base. Most of the people in the base rely on Alamogordo City for their housing, dining, recreation, and shopping needs. Aside from Alamogordo, there is the Village of Cloudcroft situated 30 miles east of Alamogordo. The village offers shopping and dining amenities 9000 feet above the ground.
For sports such as skiing, the Ruidoso Valley offers some of the finest skiing grounds during winter and first-rate horse racing during summer. Other points of interest include the Lincoln National Forest and White Sands National Monument.
There are K-12 schools in Alamogordo and two of them are inside Holloman Air Force Base – Holloman Middle and Holloman Elementary. Alamogordo High School is located downtown. For college students, there is the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Central Texas College, Park University, and New Mexico State University – Alamogordo. The Alamogordo school system determines which specific school a child goes to based on location. For those who are unable to attend school, home-based schooling programs are also provided. The 49th Medical Group provides healthcare for base personnel on active duty as well as their dependents. For emergency cases, residents are referred to the nearby Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo.
For on-base housing, Squaring Heights currently has 1413 housing units and more are being constructed. To date, there are 140 units up for rent and 130 houses for sale. There are also housing units available at White Sands Missile Range. Single airmen will be lodged at their squadrons. If accompanied, there are 50 suites available at the temporary lodging that is located right in front of the lodging office. A suite contains a telephone, living room, television and beddings. For guests, there are two vending rooms that supplies snacks, sodas, ice machines, and newspapers.
