Those who have lived on a military base in New Jersey before boast about its surprisingly beautiful beaches and boardwalks, as well as its proximity to both Philadelphia, PA and New York City.
There is definitely much to see and do.
If you choose to live in North Jersey, be aware the closer you are to the big cities the more expensive housing will be. On the other hand, in South Jersey, homes near the beach and tourist areas are very pricey. Luckily there is plenty of base housing, and also some inland and smaller cities that are affordable. As with any move, you should visit the area you are considering first. When in doubt, choose base housing.
Schools in New Jersey are well rated. The majority of parents have been satisfied with the level of education their kids received. As far as crime rate, you will see more crime near bigger cities as you would anywhere else.
Most military families will make the trip to Ft. Dix to shop at the commissary. Because it has the biggest commissary and is centrally located they will take a monthly trip.
Another option is to shop at local grocery stores, which are fairly priced as long as they aren’t in a tourist area.
Overall, New Jersey is a great place to be stationed. There is never a dull moment and it’s affordable. There are plenty of military discounts in the surrounding areas. You get to experience all the seasons and the winters are not too harsh, which is nice. The best part is exploring all the quaint oceanfront cities.
