Missouri offers a full range of activities, attitudes and employment. As a split state in the Civil War, the state is a true meeting ground of the north and the south.
The two main population centers are at opposite sides of the state: Kansas City on the western border and St. Louis on the eastern. Kansas City has a variety of museums to visit, from the first major World War I museum to the Negro Baseball Hall of Fame to the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery.
Both cities are known for jazz and barbecue. Take a trip to the top of the St. Louis Arch to see a beautiful view of the city or visit Busch Gardens to commune with their famous Clydesdales. Branson, in the southern part of the state, offers outdoor recreation, unique crafts demonstrations at Silver Dollar City and is a center for country music.
As for employment, the largest sector of employment in Missouri is the health care industry. Retail comes second and manufacturing third. Working with the elderly in a variety of settings is among the fastest growing industries in the state.
When you move to Missouri, it is wise to evaluate the health of the educational district you are moving into, since a wide range exists. The Kansas City School District in particular has had difficulties with accreditation over recent years. Post-secondary education in Missouri offers a variety of trade schools and excellent universities.
The University of Missouri has campuses in St. Louis, Rolla, Columbia and Kansas City. College sports fans will appreciate the skills of college teams like the Mizzou Tigers in Columbia, the Central Missouri State Mules in Warrensburg and the Southwest Missouri State Bears in Springfield, not to mention pro sports teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals and the St. Louis Rams and Cardinals.
