A military member assigned to TDY or has PCS orders to Westover Air Reserve Base, located near Chicopee, Massachusetts, will reside at the largest ARB (in terms of area) in the U.S. Up until 2011, this was one of the landing sites for the NASA Space Shuttle. The base is controlled by the U.S. Air Force (UASAF) as it operates 16 C-5A aircraft.
The USAF reservists and civilian personnel that are assigned here uphold national defense, provide storage of large aircraft and carry out maintenance operations.
Those that relocate here will find limited housing units. There are no government quarters on base, but there is lodging at the Air Force Inns, right off base, that provides convenient accommodations at affordable rates. There are also pet-friendly rooms. Tip: Upon arrival, be sure to make reservations in advance to ensure a room is available, accompanied or not. An alternative is to stay at Atlantic Marine Communities which serves service members (and their family) stationed at Westover ARB. It’s advised to call in advance to book as an occupant as there is a waiting list.
Reservists with children will find no Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) on base; thus, meaning they must choose their preferred school district (either the one in Chicopee, Springfield or Longmeadow). Also no Child Development Center and Youth Center are found on base. Tip: For information about either the child or youth programs, be sure to contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC).
Military dependents and/or spouses who accompany the service member to Westover ARB may have limited job opportunities on base. Tip: To find employment, got to USAJOBS.gov as it is the location providing vacant positions, if there are any. The job unemployment rate in Massachusetts is at 6.7 percent, which is ranked twenty-second lowest in the U.S. (BLS, 2012)
For family entertainment, nearby are FamCamp, an exclusive RV campsite open to all eligible military and DoD ID cardholders, and also the Chicopee Falls Dam that presents magnificent views of the water falling to form its own reservoir. Otherwise, there is the Springfield Science Museum.
