Approximately 11,000 service members and 29,000 civilians work at Fort Meade, making the installation the third largest employer of all United States military installations.
The National Security Agency has been a part of Fort Meade since the 1950s and is the reason the installation is still in use. Fort Meade consists of over 65 miles of paved roads and approximately 1,300 buildings.
The headquarters for the National Security Agency, the 902nd Military Intelligence Group and the Defense Information School are all located at Fort Meade. There are over 90 tenants at Fort Meade, including organizations from each of the armed services.
Fort Meade is less than an hour’s drive from Washington D.C., where service members and their families can tour various government buildings and museums. The Smithsonian Institute, the National Zoo and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts are located in the nation’s capital. Washington D.C. is also home to The Washington Wizards, the Washington Nationals and the Washington Redskins professional sports teams.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools operate seven schools on-post. Four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school are located on Fort Meade. The Maryland public school system is one of the best in the United States, receiving consecutive number one rankings from the College Board for AP performances and Education Week.
In addition to the schools on-post, there are several public school districts in the local community. Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Montgomery County and Prince George’s County Public Schools are some of the districts near Fort Meade. Service members and their families who are interested in higher education may consider one of the 57 colleges and universities in the state of Maryland.
Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center is located on-post. Service members can receive primary care, specialty medical care and same-day surgery at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center. There is no facility on-post that is equipped with an emergency room. However, Baltimore VA Medical Center is less than 30 minutes away in Baltimore.
Picerne Military Housing manages on-post housing on Fort Meade. There are six family communities available, each with access to one of four lifeguard-staffed pools, fitness centers, basketball courts and laundry facilities. A new 816 bed modern apartment community will be available for single soldiers to live on-post. Construction is expected to be completed in December 2013. Temporary housing is available for single and married service members on-post at Abrams Hall.
