In addition to the 5,000 service members that are assigned to Aberdeen Proving Ground, the installation employs over 7,500 civilians. The annual payroll is over $400 million.
There are more than 2,000 buildings, including administrative, training and warehouse facilities, family housing and offices, at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
On-post recreational facilities include a theater, bowling alley, swimming pool, stables and a recreation center.
Aberdeen Proving Ground supports over 80 tenant units and is home to 11 commands. The units on the installation participate in research, development and testing activities. Some of the major units at Aberdeen Proving Ground include Research Development and Engineering Command, Army Research Laboratory, Communications-Electronics Research Development Engineering Command and Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.
Aberdeen Proving Ground is located in Hartford County, Maryland. Aberdeen Proving Ground is located near Interstate 95, giving service members convenient access to the entire east coast. The installation is located just 23 miles outside of Baltimore, where families and single service members can enjoy professional sporting events, over 10 different museums and the Maryland Zoo. Harborplace Mall contains many retail stores. Fresh meat, fish and produce is available at Lexington Market, Baltimore’s famous farmer’s market.
There are no schools on post. School-aged children who live on APG North attend school in the Hartford School District. Families who live on APG South use the Cecil County Public Schools. Each school district provides its own transportation to and from school.
Service members and their families can receive their primary medical care at Kirk US Army Health Clinic. Several clinics, including adolescent health, dental, podiatry and immunizations and allergy, are conviently located on-post to ensure the health of everyone who lives Aberdeen Proving Ground. There is no emergency room on-post. The nearest military hospital is Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Harford Memorial Hospital has an emergency room and is about 20 minutes away from Aberdeen Proving Ground.
Picerne Military Housing manages family housing at Aberdeen Proving Ground. There are over 1,000 family housing units on-post. Four neighborhoods are comprised of two, three and four-bedroom homes. Each home is equipped with a dishwasher, stove and refrigerator. Maintenance and lawn care is provided by Picerne Military Housing. Wait times for family housing depend on rank and number of dependents. Picerne Military Housing works diligently to place new families in homes as quickly as possible.
Temporary housing is available on-post at The Swan Creek Inn. The Swan Creek Inn has over 200 rooms, including 68 apartment style suites. Each room has a kitchenette or a full-size kitchen. Laundry facilities are available and pets are welcome in building 2505.
