Just got your new assignment; and it’s to a base in a state you have never heard of, Maryland, you ask? Isn’t that somewhere on the East Coast? You will, of course, want to know as much about your new home as possible, whether you’re going on PCS or TDY.
Maryland, for those who have never visited the state, is a wonderful place to live. For a state of its size, it has a fairly large concentration of bases, from the sprawling Ft. Meade to Naval Air Station Patuxent River.
While the best schools in the state are in Montgomery County, in the Washington, DC suburbs, the rest of Maryland’s secondary school system. Maryland leads the nation in many education categories, being rated number one for five consecutive years from 2008 to 2012.
Depending upon the assignment location, employment for spouses off base can be difficult. The private job market in Maryland, like the rest of the country, has shrunk in many places. Off-base employment prospects are better at those bases in close proximity to Washington.
Deciding whether to live off-base or seek post housing can be a challenge. In the Washington area, for those assigned to Fort Meade or Andrews Air Force Base, for instance, there are a number of single family units or apartments relatively close to the base.
For posts farther away from major urban areas, getting nice housing close to base can sometimes be trickier. Some bases don’t have base housing except barracks and BOQs for single individuals. It’s a good idea to check with base housing before arrival.
Living in Maryland can be fun. There are a lot of interesting off-duty things to do, from skiing at the Wisp Resort, in the Alleghenies just three hours from Washington, to enjoying a day at the beach at Ocean City.
