Every soldier in the United States Army is sworn in at Fort Knox. Fort Knox is very child-friendly.
With a complete school district on-post, children of soldiers attend classes with other military youth.
A youth center, mini-golf course and water park are available for family entertainment.
There are two financial institutions on-post for soldiers and their family members to utilize.
Fort Knox Federal Credit Union and Armed Forces Bank, N.A. are both on-base.
Fort Knox is in charge of the swearing in and departure of all soldiers. The large installation is truly multi-functional. In addition to the Army Human Resources Command, the Army Cadet Command and Army Recruiting Command are some of the units at Fort Knox. Some of the other units that comprise this fort include the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division and the Ireland Army Community Hospital.
Radcliff, Kentucky is the closest city to Fort Knox. Other nearby cities include Elizabethtown, which is 15 miles south of the installation and Louisville, which lies 30 miles to the north. Many active-duty and retired military families reside in the communities that surround Fort Knox. In an area adjacent lies the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Kentucky Bullion Depository. The Depository is not open to the public.
Students who live on-post attend one of the eight Fort Knox schools. Over 2,300 students attend the four elementary schools, two intermediate schools, one middle school and one high school located on base. The district has numerous athletic programs, including football, track, soccer, golf and baseball. High school students can take advanced-placement or foreign language courses and participate in a JROTC program.
The 76-bed Ireland Army Community Hospital is located at Fort Knox. Soldiers and their family members can receive preventative and 24-hour emergency care at Ireland Army Community Hospital. Specialty treatment is available for allergy, chiropractic, dermatology and obstetrics. Physical and occupation therapy are also offered at this facility.
Knox Hills manages on-post housing for Fort Knox families and unaccompanied personnel. Soldiers and their families that live on-post can easily take advantage of nearby golf courses, PX and playgrounds. Living on post is a convenient option for soldiers at Fort Knox. However, off-post housing can be arranged with the assistance of the Housing Service Office.
