In addition to fulfilling the mission, Fort Riley is dedicated to supporting the soldiers and family members of the installation. From providing customer-focused healthcare to building a new middle school, Fort Riley aims to ensure that everyone on-post is physically and mentally fit to accomplish the goals set out for them by their commander.
Fort Riley is home to the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, the 1st Sustainment Brigade, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team and the 4th Brigade Combat Team. The 1st Infantry Division is also known as the Big Red One and fought in World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Fort Riley coordinates with regional, state and local communities to provide trained and prepared troops.
Fort Riley is located in northeastern Kansas, near Junction City and Manhattan. College sports enthusiasts can enjoy a Kansas State University Wildcats game. The campus is merely a 15 drive from Fort Riley. Professional sports fans can find a Kansas City Chiefs game less than three hours away in Kansas City.
Topeka, the capital of Kansas, is about one hour away from the installation. There are many family activities in Topeka, including the Topeka Zoological Park and the Children’s Discovery Center. While the city Manhattan is a college town and caters to young adults, older soldiers in search of nightlife will find a wide variety of bars and clubs in Topeka.
Geary County Unified School District 475 operates six schools on-post. Five elementary schools and one middle school are conveniently located at Fort Riley. A new, environmentally-friendly middle school is scheduled to be completed in 2014. High school students who live on-post or in Junction City attend Junction City High School.
Irwin Army Community Hospital is located on-post. The facility has the capabilities to care for service members and their families through their primary care and specialty clinics, as well as handle emergency situations 24 hours a day. Irwin Army Community Hospital has 44 inpatient beds and 25 outpatient clinics.
Family housing at Fort Riley is managed by Picerne Military Housing. There are six neighborhoods at Fort Riley and each one is equipped with a dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove and refrigerator. Neighborhood amenities include a computer lab, fitness center and pool.
Single service members live on-post, where a brand new barracks opened in 2012. Unaccompanied soldiers are provided with a bed, under-bed drawers, a lamp, nightstand, refrigerator and microwave. With the addition of the new barracks, every bona fide bachelor and unaccompanied service member can be housed on-post.
Temporary housing is available at Fort Riley Army Lodging. The facility has 111 units but is sometimes fully booked, so advance reservations are important. Off-post temporary lodging is an option when space is not available at Fort Riley Army Lodging.
