Known historically for being the “Intellectual Center of the Army,” Fort Leavenworth is a true historic landmark. The post is known for having a welcoming, open and green landscape and a campus-like setting, and it is also known for its friendly atmosphere. Occupying over 5,600 acres of land, the post is located on the Frontier Military Scenic Byway, which was once a military road that was used to connect Fort Gibson to Fort Scott National Historic Site.
Fort Leavenworth is famously known for being the location of the Military Corrections Complex.
It is the home of the Department of Defense’s only maximum-security prison, and it is also the site of the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility and the United States Disciplinary Barracks.
Located alongside the Missouri River, Leavenworth, Kansas is only about 25 miles away from Kansas City, Missouri. Leavenworth is a part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, and has a population of over 35,000 people. The climate in the area typically features warm, humid summers and chilly, dry winters. Due to its proximity to Kansas City and other larger areas, it is an easy drive to a host of shopping, dining and other opportunities for those who are stationed at Fort Leavenworth and choose to live on post or in the surrounding areas.
Operated by the Fort Leavenworth School District, there are three elementary schools and one junior high school located on base for dependent children to attend. Immaculata Catholic High School and Leavenworth Public High School are located nearby for older students, and the base provides bus transportation to and from school for the students who live on post with their families. Families who live off post in the surrounding areas near Fort Leavenworth may also choose to send their children to the schools in the nearby Lansing Unified School District.
The Munson Army Health Center is located on post at Fort Leavenworth. The VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare Center, St. Luke’s Northland Hospital and Cushing Memorial Hospital are all located nearby as well.
1,580 housing units are available on Fort Leavenworth. Although there are very few single family housing units available, there are three- and four-bedroom units, duplexes, eightplexes and multiplexes on post. There are plenty of housing opportunities in the surrounding area, and the cost of living is reasonable, meaning that rent isn’t too high in the houses and apartments in the Leavenworth area. The Hodge Barracks and several other temporary housing units are available for families who are just moving here.
