The US War Department acquired the lease for the land that became Scott AFB in 1917.
After World War I, Scott Field became a home of an airship and balloon mission which ended in 1937.
When the Air Force was created as a separate service, Scott Field became Scott AFB.
The base has been involved in medical transportation and patient airlift over the years, and is known as a major base for Air Force medical services.
Although Scott AFB is primarily an air base, every major branch of the military is present there, including Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines. In addition to active duty forces, the base is home to National Guard and Reserve units. The primary unit on Scott AFB is the 375th Air Mobility Wing. The 375th Wing includes a Communications Group, a Medical Group, a Mission Support Group and an Operations Group. The mission of the 375th Wing is to manage and participate in mobility, senior airlift and air refueling operations around the world as well as provide aeromedical evacuation.
Scott AFB is at an excellent location for people who enjoy outdoor recreation. There are several nearby lakes that are ideal spots for camping, hiking, boating and fishing. Belleville itself is home of the Bell-Clair Speedway, an indoor shooting range and an active parks and recreation department. In St. Louis, military families can enjoy casinos, sports bars, jazz clubs and barbecue. The city offers performing arts events such as live theater, dancing and symphony. The America’s Center in St. Louis is a major venue for concerts, conventions and trade shows. There are several galleries and museums, as well as a full range of shopping opportunities in the local area. St. Louis is the home of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and the St. Louis Rams football.
The Mascoutah Community Unit School District 19 offers public education for families who live on Scott AFB. Top area colleges and universities include Washington University, University of Missouri at St. Louis, and Webster University.
Some of the hospitals in the area are St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Belleville Memorial Hospital, both located in Belleville, as well as St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, SSM St. Mary’s Health Center and Downtown Urgent Care, all in the St. Louis area. Scott AFB itself has a fine medical facility that serves aeromedical patients and local military families.
The Landings at Scott provides family housing on base. Military members and families may explore housing options through the Military Housing Referral Office on base or in advance of arrival through the Automated Housing Referral Network. The cost of living in Belleville is much lower than the nation’s average, and housing in that town is relatively inexpensive.
