This base was established in 1918 by President Wilson. Originally under the Army it was known as Fort Hase, then changed to Navy command in 1939. The Marine Corps gained command in 1951.
A historical tidbit, than few know, is that this base was first hit by the Japanese before they continued on to Pearl Harbor. It was strategic for the Japanese as this base contained airstrips and aircraft. The first Japanese war aircraft was shot down from this base.
Hickam and Pearl Harbor share the same parcel of land with only a small gate separating the two. Although they are connected, each service has its own commissary, post exchange (PX) and other amenities, such as movie theaters, fitness and recreation facilities, restaurants and various entertainment opportunities.

Pets can accompany you so long as they are cats or dogs. They are subject to an extremely long quarantine period, so as soon as you get orders to Hawaii, start looking up the process to get your pets there!
Other pets such as reptiles, birds, or rodents are subject to discrimination based on their species due to the potential of a threat to the native island habitat.
