Camp Stewart was founded in 1940. During World War II, the need for anti-aircraft technology and training was vital, so the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Training Center was built. The new post provided an economic boost for the surrounding areas. Due to the demands of the war, the post was forced to continuously expand to accommodate new training programs.
Camp Stewart was inactivated in 1945. The post reopened in 1950 to train soldiers for service in Korea. Due to the nature of the hostilities, the focus of training at Stewart shifted to include armor and tank training.
