Dobbins ARB was first established in 1941 and was intended to be an alternative airfield for Candler Field in Atlanta. In 1943, it was named Marietta Army Airfield, but became known as Dobbins Air Force Base in 1950. During World War II, an airplane factory was located here, and it was also during this time that the base expanded significantly. In 1957, the Atlanta Naval Air Station moved here and continues to be a part of Dobbins ARB today.
The primary unit located at Dobbins ARB is the 94th Airlift Wing. This wing is the second largest one in the Air Force Reserve and is responsible for flying transport aircraft. The Georgia Air National Guard also has units here as do the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps Reserve. Dobbins ARB is primarily a training center for these reserve-component forces.
Dobbins ARB is located less than 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta. As such, there is plenty to see and do in the area. Some of the major attractions near this base include the Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Zoo, Coca-Cola Museum, and Six Flags over Georgia amusement park.
Atlanta has professional baseball, men’s and women’s basketball and football teams. There are also plenty of opportunities for shopping and fine dining. The base is also a short drive from other interesting cities including Chattanooga, TN; Nashville, TN; and Savannah, GA.
No schools or hospitals are located on Dobbins ARB, so service members who are stationed there must venture into Marietta to obtain services. The local hospital is Well Star Kennstone, with other hospitals in Atlanta including St. Joseph’s, Piedmont, Grady, and the Atlanta Medical Center. Marietta City Schools are part of the Georgia Charter School System and provide education for students in grades K through 12. There are also plenty of private schools including East Cobb Christian School, Wood Acres School and Pathways Academy.
Lots of single and multi-family housing options are available close to Dobbins ARB. The cost of housing here tends to be higher than the national average since the base is located in close proximity to Atlanta. Those who are looking for more family and military-friendly housing may want to consider moving to Chamblee or Decatur instead. The Air Force Inn is located on Dobbins ARB and provides temporary lodging for visitors or those who are just getting settled.
