Naval Air Station Banana River was opened in 1940 under the supervision of Naval Air Station Jacksonville. During World War II, the base was involved in training, search and research, anti-submarine patrols, and communications.
In 1947, NAS Banana River closed, but the base was transferred to the Air Force in 1948. The base was designated as Joint Long Range Proving Ground in 1949 before being designated as Patrick Air Force Base in 1950. The installation’s recent history is dominated by involvement in aerospace research and air defense.
All Department of Defense space projects are handled by Patrick AFB. Additionally, the base provides management of launches for other agencies. The base hosts the 45th Space Wing and other units.
Patrick AFB has access to many beautiful beaches, including Cocoa Beach, Daytona Beach, and Boca Raton. The installation is within an hour’s drive of Orlando, a major tourist destination. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, Wet ‘n Wild Waterpark, and other major attractions. The city also has several historic sites.
The historic city of Saint Augustine is roughly two hours away from Patrick AFB. Saint Augustine is home to old structures, carriage tours, and excellent food. Further up the coast, the city of Jacksonville hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, the Museum of Science and History, and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
There are no schools located on base, so children living in Patrick AFB housing attend Brevard County Schools. Bus service is provided if the school is more than two miles from the child’s home. The 45th Medical Group Clinic provides basic medical services. The clinic does not provide emergency care.
Privatized housing is available on base. Hunt Military Communities manages the units. The Air Force Housing website contains up-to-date information about the housing on Patrick AFB. Housing off base is available in the surrounding communities.
