In 1941, construction began on the Municipal Airport, Dover Airdrome. The facility was renamed to Dover Army Airbase in 1943, and Dover Air Force Base in 1948. The history of the Air Force base stems from when the United States Army Air Corps showed a need for a training airfield. The base is also one of seven airports that has served the Space Shuttle program. The mission of Dover Air Force base is to safely fly and fix aircraft, prepare Airmen for deployment, deploy Airmen, and return fallen service men and women respectfully to the United States.
There are many recreational activities on base. The Aero Club offers flight lessons for military personnel and anyone associated with the base. There is also an arts and crafts center, an auto hobby shop, golfing, bowling, fitness, a library, and an outdoor recreation center.
Off base, check out the Air Mobility Command Museum, the Dover Downs horse racing venue, and the Dover International Speedway. Beaches are also in close proximity to the area. Another thing to do is go check out a Wilmington Blue Rocks Baseball game in Wilmington, Delaware.
Children on Dover Air Force base will attend Caesar Rodney School District schools – Welch Elementary or Dover Middle School. Both of these schools are located on the base. High school students attend Caesar Rodney High School. There are several colleges and universities which offer programs on base. Tuition assistance and financial aid are available.
Healthcare on base is provided by the 436th Medical Group, supporting missions by providing a broad range of health care services. The 436th Medical Group is a 24 hour operation that also prepares fallen heroes for burial or other final resting place. Emergency care must be obtained off base at a hospital, such as the Kent General Hospital.
Options for housing are on and off base. If an off base rental or purchase is desired, you must visit the Housing Management Office in building 520 for a referral. Affordable housing can always be obtained using Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH).
Temporary housing is available on base at the Eagles Rest Inn for up to 30 days. If lodging is not available at the Eagles Rest Inn, lodging can provide a list of alternative hotels.
