A military member assigned to TDY (Temporary Duty) or has PCS (Permanent Change of Station) orders to Dover Air Force Base (AFB), located in Delaware, will be just two miles southeast of the city of Dover and reside at the largest military mortuary grounds for processing those service members (from all branches of the military) killed (or wounded) overseas before they are transferred to his/her family. Other than the base being used as a major port of entry for those deceased (or injured), it also serves the living too where airmen personnel will be assigned to one of the squadrons to support operations.
Newcomers will find unaccompanied airman quarters but not officer quarters or noncommissioned officer quarters. There are also military housing options for accompanied service members too, like Eagle Heights. Tip: To be placed in quarters upon arrival or to move into privatized housing, be sure to contact (in advance) either the Central Dorm Management Office or Housing Management Office (in Bldg 520). Also, for relocation assistance, contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center.
Those that have young children (up to five years of age) will find a Child Development Center on base (in Bldg. 212). On base offers also Family Child Care (FCC) and a Youth Center to look after, care for, or entertain children too. There is also an elementary and middle school at Dover AFB, but not a high school, so kids of this age need to attend Caesar Rodney High School, which is a few miles south of Dover.
Military dependents and/or spouses who accompany the service member can find non-appropriated funds (NAF) jobs and GS employment opportunities (via USAJOBS.gov) on base or out in town. The job unemployment rate in Delaware is at 6.9 percent. (BLS, 2012)
For family entertainment, be sure to see the Air Mobility Command Museum, which is on base. For the automotive enthusiast, why not go and see a NASCAR race at the Dover International Speedway. An option for the entire family may be to visit the Fort Delaware State Park, which is located approximately 32 miles from Dover AFB.
The average annual temperature in Dover, Delaware is 66.0 °F. This state is said to have a humid subtropical climate.
