The Naval Submarine Base New London is situated along the Thames River in southeast Connecticut.
The installation is home port to a major construction yard and 15 attack submarines.
Just across the Thames River, the Coast Guard Academy trains new service members.
The Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory is located at the Naval Submarine Base New London.
The mission of the laboratory is to use focused research to enhance the performance and protect the health of War Fighters. The Naval Submarine School, also located at the Naval Submarine Base New London, trains sailors and officers to maintain and operate submarines. The installation hosts a total of more than 70 units and over 300 reservists use the base to drill on a regular basis.
Boston is just two hours away by car. In Boston, service members can enjoy a professional sporting event or visit 16 historical sites on the Freedom Trail. Families can shop in one of the many retail establishments in the city or browse the unique arts and crafts at SoWa Open Market.
By continuing down Interstate 95 for another 30 minutes, service members can take part in the excitement of New York City. The vast array of shopping, dining and entertainment venues in the largest United States city is sure to provide a memorable experience for each visitor.
There are several school districts in the area and attendance depends of where the family resides. Children who live on-post attend Ledyard Public Schools. Groton Public Schools service the children who live in off-post government housing. Other schools and districts are available for children who live in the neighboring communities. Families have several options for their children’s education in Connecticut. There are charter, magnet and private schools near Naval Submarine Base New London.
Naval Health Clinic New England is located on-post. The clinic provides primary care, dental care and many specialist services. There is no emergency room at Naval Health Clinic New England. The nearest emergency room is Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut. The hospital is 15 minutes away from the installation.
Balfour Beatty Communities manages housing for Naval Submarine Base New London. Nine neighborhoods are located on and off-post, giving service members the opportunity to be a part of the local community. Home assignments are based on rank and number of dependents.
All of the 1,500 homes have fully equipped kitchens, and washer and dryer hookups. Community amenities include over 20 playgrounds, two outdoor swimming pools, five basketball courts, RV and boat storage and two community centers.
Navy Gateway Inns and Suites is the preferred location for temporary housing. Each room contains a microwave, high-speed Internet, cable television, a safe and a Kuerig coffee pot. The hotel is within walking distance to base recreation such as the Navy Exchange, fitness center and bowling center and a short drive away from beaches, shopping malls and the Mohegan Sun Casino and Foxwoods Casino.
