In 1959 the first class graduated. The young cadets had to be sworn in at a different base since the Academy’s permanent site was not yet finished.
The cadets were not housed in the beautiful dormitories that modern cadets live in. They lived in old barracks. Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, at the north end of Colorado Springs, the Academy is known for its beautiful architectural structures and gorgeous natural landscapes. The iconic Cadet Chapel can be seen from many locations in Colorado Springs. Its accordion-like triangular shape is unmistakable.
The United States Air Force Academy’s primary mission is to train and educate young cadets. Cadets receive a top-tier education. They are trained to become second lieutenants in the United States Air Force. Upon their graduation and commissioning, they are ready to face the challenges of a military officer’s career. The school is supported by military members and civilians.
Colorado Springs offers an endless amount of recreational opportunities year-round. Summer time activities include hiking, fishing and rafting. Avid skiers and snowboarders will find great powder within a reasonable driving distance.
There are so many great ways to entertain out-of-town guests as well. Manitou Springs is a lovely historic suburb of Colorado Springs, located at the foot of Pike’s Peak. Visitors will love taking the train up to the top of Pike’s Peak.
The Garden of the Gods is also located in Colorado Springs. Hiking around these beautiful red rock formations is a great way to spend a day.
Families stationed at the United States Air Force Academy will love attending Falcon football games in the fall. In addition, Bronco fans appreciate that Denver is only about an hour away. Colorado Springs also has a fantastic minor league baseball team. Hockey fans will love catching games at the World Arena.
The city of Colorado Springs has 25 separate school districts. Families that are considering off-base housing should find out what school district potential homes are located in. If children reside on base they will attend schools in District 20. College-aged students can attend the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. They offer a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate level programs. In addition, Colorado College is a private institution.
Most cadets and support services staff will attend the Academy Clinic. In addition, Colorado Springs is a large city with numerous hospitals and specialty clinics. Penrose-St. Francis is one of the largest hospitals, located on the north east side of town.
There are housing opportunities on and off-base at the Air Force Academy. Service members who are new to Colorado Springs should contact the Government Housing Management Office. They have a wide variety of information regarding the local housing market and surrounding areas. In a city with a population of over 400,000 people, there are fantastic real estate and employment opportunities available. The views are unbeatable. Finding a wonderful home at the foot of the Rocky Mountains is a highlight for most families who are stationed at the United States Air Force Academy.
