The base started out as an Army training facility for armored and infantry troops back in the 1940s.
It carries the name of General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, who was the second Chief of Staff for the USAF and contributed significantly to developing what we know today as the US Air Force.
Surrounded by the Santa Ynez Mountains, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, the base activity continues in the middle of economic challenges Vandenberg will be increasing missile launches this year.
There are four subunits under the 30th Space Wing command; Medical, Operations, Mission Support and Launch Group. Operation functions include sustaining space launches, missile tests launches, aeronautical and space surveillance operations.
Mission Support ensures security and law enforcement, disaster response, engineering, logistics and contracting for base services with the Launch Group executing space launch systems.
Additional associate units on base are Joint Space Operations Center, civil air patrol, flight training and testing, special investigations and energy conservation.

The Lompoc school district provides education for military families in the surrounding areas of Vandenberg AFB, Mission Hills, Lompoc and Mesa Oaks. About 10,000 students attend classes each year from K-12. Santa Barbara County offers local school students attending elementary, high school and public charters for military families stationed at Vandenberg AFB.
There are 4 major hospitals in the Vandenberg AFB communities; Lompoc Healthcare, Marian Medical Center, Santa Ynez and Arroyo Grande Hospitals. All four facilities offer healthcare experts for general medical services and specialized needs with state of the art facilities for both in and out patience services.
The Housing Management Office (HMO) on base has all of the resources a transferring military family’s needs to locate adequate housing. Vandenberg military housing is privatized, meaning that there is a management company responsible for maintaining, repairing and constructing homes for use by military personnel.
The on base HMO recommends that military personnel review the lease requirements before signing with the property management company to be sure the agreement is fully understood. There is a clause in the lease in the event that military personnel are relocated prior to the lease expiring.
Personnel have the option of either purchasing the single family home or renting. Housing communities may include playground with family parks and sports fields and some communities provide fully equipped fitness rooms and saunas for its residents.
TDY personnel can take advantage of DoD and local community military discount rates for temporary housing options; hotels, corporate housing, or apartment in the area.
