NBSD was established in 1922 by Theodore Roosevelt Jr., acting Secretary of the Navy with a mission to support the fleet, fighters and families.
The base has grown into a major repair and maintenance station, expanding facilities to include training for amphibious, torpedo and radio procedures.
Today the fleet is made up of USS cruisers, combat ships, destroyers, amphibious vehicles, frigates and Coast Guard cutters. There are two major commands operating at NBSD; Major Shore Command and Afloat Command.
The base serves as homeport with close to 200 tenant commands. As part of the San Diego community, NBSD engages with local contractors to provide services and maintain operational base functions. These days NBSD may even host ports for visiting ships for U.S. allies as an ambassador for the U.S. Navy and the United States of America.
NBSD is located in San Diego County, consisting of a large metropolitan area, a variety of cities and beach communities,and its bordering neighbor city, Tijuana, Mexico. There are three major counties accessible from San Diego; Inland to the east, North County and South Bay.
A few of the favorite spots with day and evening activities are Carlsbad, home to Legoland, Coronado a historical seaside island community and Del Mar offers entry to thoroughbred horse racing. Don’t miss Balboa Park, come and enjoy a lazy day in the gardens and walk through the Spanish architect.
Of course who could forget to visit the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the USS Midway Museum and San Diego’s Maritime Museum? For the adventurous, who enjoy the clicking of slot machines, try your luck at one of the local tribe casinos. If you are in the mood for fresh fruit and the best apple pie in the area, head north to Julian.
The Naval Medical Center is home to the Bob Wilson Naval Hospital and Naval Medicine West. It’s located on base and available for inpatient care, providing military personnel and family dependents healthcare services. There are addition healthcare facilities and hospitals in the surrounding areas, ensuring patients receive the best healthcare practices available.
The school districts in San Diego are one of the largest with more than 14,000 military dependents attending schools as part of our armed services. School levels include preschool through 12th grade, with college level programs available to qualifying students. The district boasts as one of the highest score holders in the state, leading in technology, food services, scientists, writers and leaders prepared to take San Diego’s education facilities to the next level of learning.
The housing center’s goal is to ensure our military families locate affordable and safe housing during their tours of duty. NBSD’s military housing center services over 16 housing areas.
Local real estate services are prepared to assist families moving to the area, representing the family in home buying transactions. The NBSD Bachelor Housing is located at Pacific Beacon, where resort type apartments are available to single sailors and supporting units.
