The March Air Reserve Base has a time honored history serving as an active duty aerial refueling and deployment station.
In 1996 the base underwent a conversion renaming the base March Air Reserve.
The base has maintained its presence for over 50 years as the Strategic Air Command base during the cold war.
At one time our troops occupied all 6,500 acres and during its conversion 9,000 military personnel and civilians were displaced.
These days the base is home to the Air Force Reserve Command and the Air Mobility Wing units. The additional tenants stationed on base, include Air Combat Command, and the Pacific Air Forces. The Army, Navy and Marine Reserve units along with the California Air National Guard also occupy the facilities. The base continues to undergo changes as new plans develop to establish an air cargo center accessible to military and civilian transport.
The base is situated in a unique location with the California Mountains and Big Bear ski resorts to the north for snow lovers. If you prefer summertime weather and sports activities, the same mountains offer amazing views. Visitors will find the mountain resort towns enjoyable with cabins for overnight stays, lake side shopping centers and some of the best 4th of July firework displays at Lake Arrowhead.
Less than an hour away in the other direction, visitors will find Palm Springs offering more interesting views from the top of the mountains, accessible by tram. Palm Springs has grown over the past few years, and it’s a great place to gather with friends for the weekend and enjoy casual to festive dining. Be sure to check out the designer outlet malls and local casinos along the way.
The former March Air Force Hospital was demolished and in its place is a 200 acre medical campus called “health and wellness city” known as March LifeCare. The new facility will hold over 1300 beds including a senior continuum, medical offices, ambulatory, education, research and training facilities. Plans include a hotel, healing institution and a veteran’s establishment. The neighboring cities and communities offer families more than 28 hospitals encompassing the March Air Force Base localities.
The Riverside County office of Education is responsible for the surrounding school districts. It’s one of California’s largest office for education with over 400,000 students attending public classes throughout the county.
There are 23 schools districts in Riverside County accommodating the educational demands for each community. March Joint Air Reserve Base works with local communities for off base housing in the nearby communities for military personnel and their families. Military personnel relocating should contact local real estate offices for assistance in selecting single family homes in the adjoining neighborhoods to March Air Force Base. On base accommodations are available for TDY travelers and military personnel need to know that the on base housing is limited, requiring personnel to seek housing off base. Rates vary with local hotels offering service men per diem rates for government travel, while on temporary duty assignments.
