Fort Irwin is part of the U.S. Army Forces Command. As one of the 15 FORSCOM units, Irwin provides soldiers with realistic training experiences to ensure their success on the battlefield.
Nearly 9,000 people live at Fort Irwin, including service members and their families. Approximately 5,000 service members spend time at the National Training Center every month.
The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment serves as the opposing force for training at the NTC.
Soldiers in this unit spend several days each month in the field. Through participation in war games, the Blackhorse Calvary prepares deploying troops for battle in war zones.
Tanger Outlets is located in Barstow, California and is a popular shopping destination. Big Bear Lake is approximately an hour away and offers a host of outdoor activities that the entire family can enjoy, including cycling, boating, skiing and hiking.
The major cities or Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, California are both within a few hours drive from Fort Irwin.
The Silver Valley Unified School District operates three schools on-post. One elementary school, one intermediate school and one middle school are located on Fort Irwin.
Transportation is provided to Silver Valley High School for older children who live on-post. Fort Irwin families may also use the Barstow Unified School District but transportation is not provided. Other educational options include charter school and homeschooling. The school liaison officer is available to assist families with their educational needs.
The Dr. Mary E. Walker Center is located on-post to care for the primary health care needs of Fort Irwin service members and their families. Weed Army Community Hospital is also located on-post and has a 24-hour emergency room, as well as 27 inpatient beds.
Family housing at Fort Irwin is managed by California Military Communities LLC. The Villages of Fort Irwin consists of over 700 new one to four bedroom single family homes. Amenities include new appliances, a community center, pool and splash park. Off-post housing is available, but because the nearest community is 40 minutes from Fort Irwin, living off-post requires a daily round-trip commute of over one hour. Single service members and geographical bachelors reside in barracks on-post.
Temporary housing is available at the Landmark Inn. Because there are no other hotels within 35 miles of Fort Irwin, it is important to make reservations early. The hotel has modern amenities such as in-room refrigerator and microwave, internet connection and barbecue facilities. Pets cannot be accommodated at the Landmark Inn but boarding is available on-post.
Public transportation is available from Fort Irwin to the neighboring city of Barstow. The service is used by service members who live on-post to gain access to the city for shopping and entertainment. Service members who live off-post can use this service to commute to the installation Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
