Arkansas hosts three military installations. Fort Chaffee is a training base for the Army Reserve and National Guard. Pine Bluff Arsenal is unique in that it stores chemical weapons. Little Rock is home to the 19th Airlift Wing. Unemployment is 7.1% and most of the employment is near Little Rock.

Little Rock Air Force Base is located in central Arkansas. The installation opened to air traffic in 1955 on a limited basis but the base was not fully functional until January 1957. The Air Education Training Command is part of the installation. Little Rock AFB is home to the 19th Airlift Wing as well as an Air National Guard Wing. The capital of Arkansas, Little Rock, is a short drive away from the post.
