Fort Rucker was created in response to the World War II mobilization of United States troops. In the mid-1950s, the Army gained control over its own arial training and the Army Aviation Center was established at Fort Rucker. It wasn’t until 1983, however, until aviation became a separate branch of the Army and formal aviation training began at Fort Rucker.
The mission at Fort Rucker is to develop the Army’s aviation force. As the home of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, Fort Rucker is responsible for the education and training of all Army aviation personnel. The 1st and 110th and 128th Aviation Brigades coordinate the flight instruction for the Army. United States Air Force aviators are also trained at Fort Rucker.
In addition to the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, the U.S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center, Aviation Center Logistics Command, Army Research Institute Rotary-Wing Aviation Research Unit and the National Guard Multimedia Branch are housed at Fort Rucker.
